Does being depressed during pregnancy make you more likely to have postpartum depression?

Does being depressed during pregnancy make a woman more likely to experience postpartum depression?

Please provide medical links/knowledge or your direct experience, not what you think could happen.

Thanks

i think it could. i had bad depression with one of mine and i ended up with terrible ppd. get help now because if you can fix it now, it will be easier in the long run. you want to be able to enjoy your new baby.

In my personal experience…I've had pregnancies that I wasn't depressed…and one's that I was….every time I have experienced Post-partum Depression. I don't know if it ups the risk…but I can say that I experience mild depression off & on even when I'm not pregnant…so that could be why I get PPD every time.

I also make sure that I tell my Dr & the nurses on the ward that I get it so that they are aware of it. I don't go nuts or want to kill my kids or husband…I just get so tired & sad…cry over every little thing and have major mood swings (like being real angry over something stupid)

    It could.

No matter what a woman's history is, hormones make women depressed. Some more than others, and some actually end up with post partum psychosis. Scary.

Tell your husband or significant other to keep a close eye on you. By the time that severe depression or even psychosis sets in, you often aren't aware of it, and it's too late.

    Best wishes.
