Should Dems trade abortion rights for universal healthcare and legalized weed?

It would be a pretty good trade. Abortion is probably the number one conservative issue. To get Roe v. Wade overturned would be too tempting for them not to take a chance on universal healthcare and legalized pot.
While I realize that this is a cherished right of many liberals, wouldn't universal healthcare be so much better? Plus, with medical marijuana commonplace you could probably get the government to cover your weed bill, too. Plus, overturning Roe wouldn't make abortion illegal, it would just give the decision back to the individual states. Most liberal states would probably just keep the current abortion policy.

No. Do you put a lot of time into coming up with these ideas?
Sounds good
Let's trade the elimination of government ownership of schools for Obama's resignation.
Yes! It is amazing what the Democrats could achieve if they were willing to compromise. I think Bill Maher said, "If the Dems would just give up the gays and the guns, they could stay in power forever!"
maybe we should have traded war for universal health care, and our economy would be in this bad of shape for a good reasonand BTW just so you dullards know…. Pro-choice is the compromise.
No, because there is no need to trade.
Its not an option. Nor does it make sense. Know much about constitutional law?
No, they will be stoned, have more babies and deplete the supply of Doritos.
No. This Dem does not want general marijuana use legalized. We will have both the right to choice and universal healthcare.
No, Democrats love their abortion rights . As a matter of fact I think if you are a Democrat it should be manditory to have an abortion all the time.
Ugh!!! I'm all for legalized weed and all but I'm against banning abortion (I believe in the right to choose) and I don't believe universal healthcare is the best way to go (we need to make it more affordable, it shouldnt be a complete government system handout), so the trade-off isn't that great in my opinion.
SURE!
I'll trade whatever abortion rights I have for universal health care.
Of course I'll never have an abortion, so I can speak for myself all I want.
Something you right-wingers need to learn.
I appreciate your attempt at compromise – but two wrongs do not make a right – or a left… Abortion has to do with innocent human beings – trading off their right to life – for money – sounds unethical to me – How come we can't come to the realization that preborn children are just as entitled to the freedoms of any other American? How come we can't see that what we did to the Native Americans was genocide, that we deprived the African Americans of their liberty, and that we have robbed our offspring their right to life?
I'd take abortion rights over universal healthcare and weed any day. Women deserve the right to control their own bodies, I don't care what state you're from. No one else should make that decision for them. The government has no place in deciding when life really starts. Doctors and scientists have their own theories about when life starts, and various religions have their own views on when life starts. It's too personal of an issue to simply make a law that says "Abortion is murder" because that is not necessarily true.
Now universal healthcare and marijuana legalization have their own reasons for not being a part of our society. While the idea of universal healthcare is nice, it raises the problem of the quality of care one would get. This is a common complaint in countries that have universal health care. Would a cancer patient not get the treatment they need because hospitals would be government funded? That issue needs to be worked out before making universal health care a reality in our country.
Legalizing marijuana may not be a great idea either. Sure, it's probably the safest drug one can take, but legalizing it may encourage young people to try other drugs, like cocaine or heroin. As "safe" as pot may be, it is still a mind altering substance that can affect mental and physical health in a number of ways. Perhaps legalizing it wouldn't be a big deal, but it's not a right that needs to be protected. People that want to smoke pot are going to find a way to do it anyway — and more than likely, they won't harm themselves as a result of it (as opposed to if abortion was illegal, women may put themselves in harms way in order to terminate a pregnancy). Protecting women's rights is a much bigger issue.
No. When marijuana is illegal, you can still find it, and be pretty sure it's not gonna kill you. Most people don't buy their pot from a guy on the street, but some kind of personal friend (who smoked it and lived before you ever bought any). Hell, not even the dealer on the street wants his clientele dead. While I'll grant that any "back-alley abortion" system that would fall into place today would be better organized and probably healthier than the system pre-Roe, I'd still rather take my chances with an illegal drug than an illegal surgery. I live in Canada, granted, where not only is abortion legal but, in my province, covered by the government health plan. Giving abortion patients a three month supply of oral contraceptives or inserting an IUD during the abortion procedure is also covered.
Which leads me to universal health care. With a Democratic House and Congress, it's likely to happen during Obama's term any way. However, universal health care is not universal if it does not allow for women to have access to a procedure that forty percent of them will undergo in their lifetimes. Universal health care should be fought for, but not at the expense of other rights. Legalizing marijuana is just a good way to make it more available, but with more additives and a good chunk of tax thrown onto the price.
